Yahoo! Messenger v6 on the way out... |

.. or rather, for now perhaps, the "help" aspect of v6 is on the way out. If you cruise by their much loved v6 help pages at the top you will see a notice stating...
"Starting January 3rd, 2007, we will no longer offer the online help pages or customer support for Yahoo! Messenger 6.0 . Click here to upgrade to the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger, version 8.1."
all good things must end I guess... but it will be sad to see them go.
If you're a version 6 user and you're not so eager to jump to version 8 then perhaps consider taking a minor step up to version 7 or v7.5, both of which are still available for download from Yahoo! It's often best to download the last release from previous versions as it avoids prior issues since corrected... there are other versions available but below is the last for each version range of the two major version releases prior to v8...
last release of v7 was
7.0.2.120 (for Windows 98 / 2000 / ME / XP) released 23 December 05

last release of v7.5 was 7.5.0.819 (for Windows 98 / 2000 / ME / XP) released 16 June 06

has popped up over at icq.com. Fingers crossed this version it will be something to write home about and hopefully it will be a compromise between the current ICQ 5.1 and the classic ICQ Pro (2203b) the latter of which is basically a dead duck as confirmed by AOL when they issued a statement announcing the "fix" for the the AOL ICQ Pro 2003b heap overflow vulnerability was for ICQ Pro users to "upgrade" to ICQ 5.1 *cough*
Details regarding ICQ 6 features are a little thin on the ground, their ICQ 6 Blog states "...I can say there are elements which are very innovative. For example, a
new and friendly way of sending IM to your friends, or the ability to
see easily and clearly all the messages received.
In general, I like this version for its user friendliness and great colors..." which doesn't really tell us a great deal... but "innovative" give us hope :)
Over at the official ICQ Message boards there is a ICQ 6 Preview forum posting by the ICQ Team which introduces the upcoming version and invites ICQ users to register their interest in testing ICQ 6 so if you're interested in a sneak peek then jump in line for the slow release. |
