THIS WAS DONE USING VERSION 4,0,0,953
NOTE: Just to reiterate... for the Smileys
that you have editied to show on other ppls IM's they too MUST have the same files
as you do :-)
Last Updated 24 May 2001
Format, Size etc...
IMPORTANT... With each bmp file there is an associated .rtf file...
If you have Z.bmp then you’ll find an Z.rtf file as well... they go hand in hand.
The exception to this is when you FIRST install and launch messenger... open explorer
and expand c:\ till you're at
c:\program files\yahoo\messenger\media\smileys
you’ll notice that only the .bmp files are there... once you’ve used a smiley
for the first time the .rtf file is automatically created (Stephen discovered
that!), now don’t forget that part of it as it comes into play when you add/change
the smileys.
Format...
24 May 2001...From Stephen (not only is he patient he's also very hard
working!) it appears the format needs to be .bmp and saved at 256 colours.
Ok I personally haven’t played around with this too much, but at this stage stick
with a .bmp pic.
Size...
24 May 2001...Stephen has worked an 18x18 graphic, 256 colours and saved
in .bmp format will always have an associated rtf "file size" of 1,438bytes. If
you are having problems getting your new smiley to show in the IM window check
the rtf file.
22 May 2001... Andrew and I played around with this today and have fine
tuned the process... believe me it's easy to follow ;-) Basically you can use
"autocreate" for a standard 18x18 pic but anything over and above that you'll
need to manually create the rtf file... which Andrew taught me how to do properly
today... Thank you :-)
21 May 2001... at this stage (although we haven’t tried anything larger
than Andrews pic) there seems to be no barrier when it comes to the file size..
as in, your new bmp doesn’t have to be the standard smiley size (18x18) I haven’t
tested out what happens when you put it to the drop down menu though.. I’ll do
that soon.
So who can see them????
Think of the Smileys the same way as the sound files... for it to 'show' on your
screen and on the IM screen of the person your sending to you BOTH must have the
same files. see [Smiley
Reference tables] for our thoughts on this
Bits and Bobs...
As you know (if you've read through [How
we did it...]) Andrew and I came to the end result two separate ways...and
when you take into account how Stephen got his to work you could say that we came
up with 3! I’m still unable to get Andrews way to work for me... I’m embedding
the bmp incorrectly into wordpad.. I’ll get there one day though ;-) *see
Size... further down for an update on this! At this stage I guess
you could say it’s still hit and miss to some degree... but we know it does work!
I guess it’s a matter of which way will work for you so if you want to play around
with it read on for our basic notes.
