For those of you are having problems with Yahoo Messenger and you've done everything else known to man and beyond then this page [Remove/Delete] and following [Clean Install] are perhaps your next step in trying to correct the problem... at this point I'm assuming that you really have tried everything.. including contacting Yahoo by using their [Yahoo! Help Feedback Form] and following their own instructions... if not please do so as it's thier program and they know best.. we hope ;-) Anyway, like I said I'm assuming you've taken all measures available that includes making sure your computer is up to date with patches, critical update files, system files etc and that you haven't just sat there and gone "umm.. well I think it is" make sure that it is and that you're prepared to do some reading and learning along the way.. the steps below and on the[Clean Install] page are provided as is where is.. check out our site [disclaimer] for clarification :-)
Quick check list... does your computer have the minimum sytem requirements? Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher have you updated windows lately? if not head to [Windows Update] (Microsoft site) have you checked for other updates? if not start now, check for latest drivers etc do you have the latest version of Yahoo Messenger? if you don't know how to check what version you're running then go to [Troubleshooting How do I check...] at the time or writing this the latest version is 5001038
A quick and simple way to correct run of the mill errors is simply to install messenger over the top of itself.. that being either download messenger from [http://messenger.yahoo.com] and run through the install steps or if you still have the main install file (ymsgrie.exe) double click this to launch install and let it just run over the top of what you already have.
If you're problem is a little more serious then continue with the steps listed below...
Close Yahoo Messenger... You must NOT have Yahoo Messenger running when you go uninstall it.. not at all.. you'll feel like your fingers have been cut off and your totally isolated from the world but it wont be for long ;-)
If you have messenger running your first step is closing Messenger down..either use Login > Disconnect or right click the messenger icon in your system tray and select Sign out of Yahoo and Exit. Next... give your computer the three finger salute.. that being hit Ctrl + Alt + Del on your keyboard and make sure that Ypager is NOT listed... if it is if it is then highlight it, then hit End Task.. 3 finger salute again to make sure it's gone.. if not keep repeating the process.. if you get a Program Not Responding message this is ok.. just hit End Task on that dialog box.. once your sure Ypager is not showing then hit cancel to exit out of Close Program.
To remove Yahoo Messenger... don't go leaping straight to your Yahoo! Messenger folder.. use the uninstall program that comes with Yahoo Messenger (unwize.exe) you can access this by either...
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs scroll to Yahoo Messenger and click on the listing hit the Add/Remove button Select Automatic Hit OK
or Start > Programs > Yahoo! Messenger > Uninstall Yahoo! Messenger
If you're just wanting to install messenger again in the hope that this time it 'might' work properly then either download it from [http://messenger.yahoo.com] (Yahoo! site) and re-install messenger again or make your way to c:\program files\yahoo!\messenger and open the Install folder.. in there should be a program called ymsgrie.exe (v 5001038 is 2563kb) double click the file to launch the install of Yahoo Messenger and you're away again. If you suspect the file may be corrupt then don't go running the exe file.. keep following the steps posted below :-)
If you receive an error message stating that Yahoo Messenger can't be uninstalled then there's a good chance that at some stage when you tried to uninstall Messenger the program was still running in the background. To fix this problem your only left with one option.. that being manually deleting the Messenger folder.. read on.
Manually Delete the Yahoo! Messenger folder... If you suspect the problem goes a little deeper, your suffering from major problems or you got the error stating it can't be uninstalled then the method below is for you...
NOTE: If you can use Add/Remove programs then use it! This method is for those who can't use add/remove or those who want to [Clean Install of Yahoo Messenger] ... this method WILL result in your achives being deleted along with any editing smileys, sound files etc etc that you've used to spice up messenger. To salvage your sounds/smileys simply remove them for their folders and store them somewhere else... your My Documents folder is a good place.
Hit Windows Key+E to take you to explorer view.. if you don't have a windows key on your keyboard right click the start button then select Explore. Navigate your way to your Yahoo! folder, the correct path is C:\Program Files\Yahoo! assuming C:\ is your hard drive :-) If you have MSN Messenger installed then on your journey you'll notice a folder called Messenger.. this is NOT your yahoo messenger folder, it's your MSN Messenger so don't delete it just keep scrolling.. the program files are sorted alphabetically so head to the bottom and track down the Yahoo! folder.. then click on the + sign beside Yahoo! this will expand the folder
You may not have all the folders shown in the picture listed, it will depend on what yahoo options you have installed so don't worry if yours doesn't look exactly the same. If you've got wav files or edited smileys now is the time to pull them out of their respective folders (c:\program files\yahoo\messenger\media for wav's and c:\program files\yahoo\messenger\media\smileys for Smileys) and move them to your My Documents folder. Remember this next step will delete your archives. You can either left click once on the messenger folder then hit delete on your keyboard or right click the messenger folder and select delete...at Confirm Delete hit Yes.
If you're after a totally clean install or suspect the program/s you downloaded were corrupt then pop open the Installs folder.. look for a file called ymsgrie.exe (2563kb) then delete it. This is the main install exe file :-) Then make your way to c:\windows\temp and look for a file called yahoo!_messenger_install.exe (for version 5001038 its 190kb) and delete that too.
Once you've done that then reboot your computer and proceed with the steps shown at [Clean Install of Yahoo Messenger]
