ICQ v5.1 Emoticons and tZers

ICQ v5.1 has "new" Emoticons, they aren't animated, but then they never have been, but if you are struggling to adjust to the revamped smileys never fear because you can quickly and easily revert from the new to the old familiar ones or vice versa. All the smileys .bmp files and they are stored locally C:\Program Files\ICQLite\Smilies with the new defaults being located directly in the Smilies folder, and the previous ones in C:\Program Files\ICQLite\Smilies\OldSmilies\, because of this setup switching is a breeze and you don't have to fiddle around with downloading or reinstalling... it's a completely stress free excercise :)

If you're looking to change your ICQ emoticons or just want to see how it works, then head to...

Main > Preferences > Skin / Appearance

Under Change your ICQ Emoticons and Sounds, click on Browse beside the Emoticons field, there you can select the default location for the latest smileys, stored locally, at C:\Program Files\ICQLite\Smilies

or you can switch (Main > Preferences > Skin / Appearance) to the Old Smileys at C:\Program Files\ICQLite\Smilies\OldSmilies\

click Apply, click OK and you're all set to go.

If you're familiar with Windows Live Messenger "Winks" then you'll have no problems getting your head around ICQ tZers (Teazers). You can "Teaz" any online or offline ICQ friend on your buddy list but you can't teaZ any AIM friends.

ICQ v5.1 Sounds

Some people greatly dislike the default ICQ sounds, personally I really love them, nothing beats the default ICQ Startup.wav and once you get past the confusion of Message.wav (for a new IM) being the same sound used in Ipswitch WS FTP Pro for a connection error you are pretty much all good to go ;)

Changing your sounds, actually downloading new Sound Schemes, is part of the new and improved (My) Xtraz, click on Xtraz > My Xtraz > Change your ICQ Sounds
from there you can test out the different Schemes and the .wav file for each ICQ event, to download a scheme click on the yellow download button to the right of scheme you wish to install. Strangely enough it's not actually handled from within ICQ itself, so select a download location for the .exe file, then double click to install. Note, be aware that ICQ will automatically restart after the new scheme has been installed so make sure you have no IM sessions or file transfers running at the time.

If you have issues downloading the Sound Schemes from within ICQ e.g. ICQ crashes during the scheme selection within Xtraz, then use the direct download locations below for each scheme currently available.

Once your scheme has been installed and ICQ has restarted, you can switch to your new scheme via...
Main > Preferences > Skin / Appearance

click on Change, click on Up a Level, and you should see your newly installed Sound Schemes listed in individual directories, select the scheme you'd like to use, click Apply, click OK and now you're all set to go.
