Yahoo! Messenger version 8 Default Sounds (.wav files)

Your "knock" is dead? Your "buzz" is broken? Can't hear your default Yahoo! sounds?

If you're still running version 800683 of Yahoo! Messenger then you will have no idea what I'm talking about, but if you're running version 800701 (released 10 August 06) you will... but rest assured dear 8.0.0.701 users, you're not loosing your marbles and you're not going deaf, what's happened is that in version 8.0.0.701 Yahoo! has replaced the previous wav. files with brand new ones... and they will take some getting use to as they are really quite different.

There was no indication that this had happend and to make things even more confusing, the file names have been retained as with the Alert assignments, so really the only subtle giveaway of this change was the increased .wav file size... and of course not being able to hear our much loved "knock", "doorbell" etc ;)

If you greatly dislike the new sounds, then you can easily switch back to the ones provided in Yahoo! Messenger version 8.0.0863 (and previous versions) by navigating your way to the default directory...
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Media, you should see the structure shown below with the .wav files visible...

all you need to do now is download our replacement file 800683sounds.zip (33kb), unzip it and select all the .wav files included in the folder, now copy and paste the files to the default directory (C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Media) and overwrite when prompted.
If you want to switch back to the new default sounds included in version 8.0.0.701 then simply grab 800701sounds.zip (281kb) and repeat the instructions given above.

NOTE: just to note... each time you upgrade/reinstall Yahoo Messenger (like for future udates) doing so will ovewrite the .wav files so you can either keep a copy of the downloaded folder so that it's on hand to replace them again next time or you can check out Andy's Old/New Sound Alerts Toggle which lets you pick and choose which sounds (old and new) for each event and for each user! You can quickly choose to set all alert sounds to the old or new sounds for any number of users on your machine (just tick the check box), or click the edit button beside the user name to toggle individual alert sounds from the old to new and back again. No zip files to locate, no changes need to be made when upgrading messenger, toggle from old to new any number of times even while messenger is running
