Yahoo! Messenger Smileys & Windows Live Messenger Emoticons
Not all of the features of Yahoo! Messenger are available when we talk to our Windows Live Messenger friends, this rings true with the smileys also. When you start an Instant Messenger session with one your Windows Live Messenger friends one of the first things you will notice is that your Standard Yahoo! Messenger smiley drop down menu is a little different....

One thing you will notice above is the different key combinations that are being used by Yahoo! Messenger when you're in an Instant Messaging session with a Windows Live Messenger user... Yahoo! has traded in it's default key combos and uses the Windows Live Messenger defaults
Based on the smileys shown available in the Yahoo! Messenger Drop Down menu
when in an IM session with a Windows Live Messenger friend....

 |
a bit of a worry if you manually enter your key combinations rather
than using the drop down smiley selection menu
Windows Live Messenger users have an extra smiley on their drop down menu which you can manually type into
Yahoo! Messenger
and it generates our much loved Big Grin smiley...

If your Windows Live Messenger friend uses the Star (*) they will only see the key combination while you,
on Yahoo! Messenger
will be able to see the Yahoo! star,
yet if you use
the Star from Yahoo! Messenger
to a Windows Live Messenger user it still wont work for them.... quirky ;)

Your Windows Live Messenger friends can also generate the Yahoo! Yin Yang symbol,
it's a bit of a worry that are really using handcuffs though ;) If you use (%) from Yahoo! Messenger
it will display Yin Yang for you, but your WLM friend will only see the key combination (%)

Despite Yahoo! Messenger and Windows Live Messenger users both having some of the same smileys / icons
(shown below)
there is no intergration for them between the two user groups so none of them are available for
using in an IM session...

While all of the default smileys shown below will work in Yahoo! Messenger none
of them will work in Windows Live Messenger, some generate a mixed combination of
smiley and partial key combinations while others show just the key combo
