I'm a huge fan of ICQ Pro 2003b and for the longest time I've put off making the move to ICQ 6 but last week I took the leap... and while "new" is kinda cool, once that wears off ICQ's latest offering is a little dull around the edges *blush* My biggest concern with making the switch was transfering across all my old ICQ archives / chat history which date back to ICQ Pro 2001a and have grown through the version to happily reside in 2003b, and as I'd been intermittently been running ICQ 5.1 during the last few months I had two sets of archives that need to be merged before upgrading to ICQ 6 at which point I could import them... it was a rather stressful time but if you're in the same position or a similar one where you are concerned about the archive import then check out our ICQ 6 article which covers the steps I took, including creating backups, which ultimately lead to all my old archives being readily available in ICQ 6, which I have to admit is pretty dang awesome.
Before I checked out the new ICQ 6 features, I poked my nose into the latest smileys and tZers... I'm not overly fond of the new smileys but I strongly suspect that's because I'm yet to adjust to their new look, which is dramatically different to the ICQ Pro 2003b Smileys but I was impressed by the tZers which are very cool :)
But back to the ICQ 6 features... without doubt Quick IM and Grouped (tabbed) Conversations are my favourite new additions. I'm already hooked on Quick IM, and while Grouped Conversations have a few quirks, the idea of having tabbed IMs in ICQ is still appealing.
I took the ICQ 6 features for a test driving across platforms (Mac and Windows) and supported clients (ICQ, AIM, iChat) and while I'm struggling to adjust to ICQs latest offering I do see it as a good step forward, but I am concerned about how similar it is to AIM. Most ppl who know me well know I'm not overly fond of AIM, it's yet to find a place in my own personal IM world as I really haven't found anything about it that I like, or that it likes about me. I've never had a version of AIM that actually functions as it should.. but perhaps one day I'll take another look at AIM and see what v6 has to offer... until then I'll stick with ICQ 6.. at least for now ;)

has popped up over at icq.com. Fingers crossed this version it will be something to write home about and hopefully it will be a compromise between the current ICQ 5.1 and the classic ICQ Pro (2203b) the latter of which is basically a dead duck as confirmed by AOL when they issued a statement announcing the "fix" for the the AOL ICQ Pro 2003b heap overflow vulnerability was for ICQ Pro users to "upgrade" to ICQ 5.1 *cough*
Details regarding ICQ 6 features are a little thin on the ground, their ICQ 6 Blog states "...I can say there are elements which are very innovative. For example, a
new and friendly way of sending IM to your friends, or the ability to
see easily and clearly all the messages received.
In general, I like this version for its user friendliness and great colors..." which doesn't really tell us a great deal... but "innovative" give us hope :)
Over at the official ICQ Message boards there is a ICQ 6 Preview forum posting by the ICQ Team which introduces the upcoming version and invites ICQ users to register their interest in testing ICQ 6 so if you're interested in a sneak peek then jump in line for the slow release. |

they have a few! I got an email from Joerg last week and he mentioned that I barely covered Skype *blush* so I dusted off version 1.2.0.48 (released 20th April 2005) and sprung into action with v2.5.0.141 (released 23rd August 2006) and I had a great time :) I don't use, and perhaps wont use Skype a great deal as I don't really have a use / need / desire for Calling online but I thought I'd check out what else was on offer and what basic text IM'ing was like... my conclusion.. it's great! I've only touched on the bare basics, not the features, and of course I had to check out the smileys that Skype offers, and boy do they offer a few. If you've wondered about Skype but never ventured as far as downloading then check out our article Skype for some brief information and screenshots and if you want to know about their emoticons then swing by our article Skype Smileys where we have a full table of the smileys on offer including the secret ones (don't read it if you don't want to know). The Skype smileys are all there from to to and all the ones in between. We've displayed them in full, living, animated colour, exactly how they appear in your IM windows and you'll also be able to see what key combinations, default aside, will be needed to generate them |
