In versions 400953 through to 410998 the .bmp files were used on the drop down menu and the .rtf files were used in the IM window. Version 4.1 saw the introduction of WebCam!

With versions 5001015 - 1029 the .bmp is still used for the drop down menu but the .gif format was introduced into the IM window which allowed the use of animated smileys like the American flag and the pumpkin. IMV's were also introduced with v5.0 along with the typing indicator.
The "oddities" in beta 5..
- firstly the v.gif file (ghost) had been included with the download (1015 and 1018) and could be found quite in your media/smileys folder but it was not referenced in the main exe. When 1029 was released the ghost (v.gif) was replaced by the animated pumpkin (also v.gif) this time associated with keystrokes (~~) to further information see Yahoo's Ghost
- Changes in the file names.. L to Q, M to U, N to X, O to Y, Y to O... similar to a corporate restructing but no one was fired ;-)
- As mentioned above the .bmp files are what puts the smileys on your drop down menu.. which explains why the secret ones don't have .bmp files (q, u, x, y, p, r, t, w) the oddity here is S (the skull) which was shipped with a .gif and a .bmp yet it still remains secret.

Version 5501214 was the first beta release out the door, with v5.5 came 64 smileys! 35 were on the drop down menu, the remaining were "secret", 4 of which were installed with the Yahoo Fighter IMV.. no imv = no Yahoo Figher smileys. A lot of animated smileys were released with 5.5 and some of the oldies but goodies had a makeover. File formats stayed the same the file names changed, alphabetical naming was replace with numerical.

Yahoo Messenger v6001643 (24 May 04) saw many of our much loved smileys have a makeover and get "animated", we also got 15 new smileys and now had 48 available to us on our drop down menu out of a combined 75, were were in smiley heaven :)

Yahoo Messenger v7001426 (10 August 05) brought with it 8 new smileys, we now had 87, 54 are on the drop down menu and 33 are hidden/secret. All the smileys were touched up and toned down with the much loved bright yellow turning a softer shade...

Yahoo Messenger v750811 (24 April 06) brought with it "voice" and 1 new smiley bringing us to a grand total of 88, the Yahoo Fighter IMV files changed names (replacing those they took) and we saw the introduction of .swf files to our C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Media\Smileys folder... one for each smiley.
